THE WHITE LION GOLF SOCIETY
“From Coppenhall to Carnoustie…..”
THE AIM OF THE WHITE LION GOLF SOCIETY IS TO PROMOTE FRIENDLY RIVALRY BETWEEN FELLOW GOLFERS BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURSE AND TO SHARE GOOD FUN, GOOD FOOD AND GOOD DRINK !!!

Jackie & Kevin went to The White Lion in Warmingham Road in Crewe in 2005 and “inherited” a young waiter, Tom Minshull and a couplke of old no-longer-played-for golftrophies, Tom was a “late starter” at golf but progressed rapidly, winning the Sentinel Cup whilst working ast Malkins Bankl in the shop.
Caddying for Tom re-ignited the Landlord’s interest in playing golf and initially for the defunct Waletr “Nobby” Clarke Memorial Trophy a golf day was arranged. This quickly blossomed into what is now an annual “tour” of some 8/10 events played mainly at local courses, usually on Sundays as the format is breakfast and 18 holes at the Club and then a popular prize 3 course dinner (and some beer) after back in the restaurant at The White Lion.
Membership includes some members from Crewe GC and Wychwood Park GC whilsgt around half have no membership and play mainly with the Society which runs its own handicapping system, catering for players from +3 to 36 handicaps.
Sponsors have been picked up along the way and at the season “finale” The Pub Championship, the top 10 players on the day were rewarded (on top of the regular prizes) with FREE beer for the night ….. we shut late that night !!! (see picture posted seperately)
Tom played in the Society off +3 and holds two Society records – the “Best Round” – a gross 63 (6 under) round Clays in 2011 and he also had the Society’s only hole in one to date at Knights Grange GC in 2010.
Sunsequently he has turned pro, working first as a very popular Assistant at Delamere Forest Golf Club and has now recently moved on to the role of Assistant Por at Carnoustier Golf Links …. where he will again meet up with several of the Society membersas in September we compete in the annual Craws Nest Tassie event held ovwer the fearsome Open venue and it’s sister course the Burnside.
To join the W.L.G.S. is free, days cost between £30 and £40 depending upon the venue and that includes breakfast, golf, dinner and prizes.
New members are always welcome and to join simply pop in for a drink and have a chat with Jackie or Kevin.
We don’t sell Carlsberg but we are “probably” the BEST golf society in Coppenhall !!!
